HYDRAULIC HOSE SAFETY

Always think of safety when buying hydraulic hoses

Hydraulic hoses are manufactured to deal with high pressures and temperatures. When hydraulic hoses burst, or even leak, this can cause serious injuries and can be fatal.

Although the maximum shelf life is generally ten years at the most, hydraulic hoses should be continuously inspected for any type of damage such as abrasions, cracks, or blisters. If such defects are found, the hose should be replaced, not repaired.

The same is true when assessing pressure and flow rates; always ensure that the hose is selected based on the requirements of the operation.

FAQ

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions surrounding hydraulic hoses.

Hydraulic hoses are high-quality robust hoses that are made by combining interwoven strands of steel and synthetic rubber. They are manufactured to carry oil from one part of the system or vehicle to another.

Hydraulic hoses can be extremely dangerous and should always be assembled and installed by a reputable and qualified person and business who should be accredited by the BFPA.

Hydraulic hoses come in a variety of options to best suit the application requirements. There are many considerations including:

  • Pressure requirement.
  • Flow rate requirement.
  • Impulse cycle requirements – or how often the hose will be used. Good quality hose manufacturers test the hose and match the fittings to a rate of 200,000 cycles as a minimum, but this can go up to 1,000,000 cycles for more arduous applications.
  • Temperature – the faster the hydraulic oil is pushed around the system, the hotter it will become.
  • Inner bore size – or the diameter of the inner wall of the hose. For large industrial applications, this can be as large as 6 inches but ¼ inch and ½ inch are used frequently.
